---------------------------------
Free and open source software (FOSS) is now an indispensable part of every organization, ranging from infrastructure software to end-user applications, passing through a myriad of developer tools. Furthermore, the free software movement led to innovations in software licensing, economic models, communication and collaboration processes, among other areas, which have been driving FOSS research in both computer science and social sciences.
The International Free Software Workshop (WSL) is a scientific event which takes place within the International Free Software Forum (FISL), one of the most important FOSS conferences in the world. Since 2000, WSL and FISL are held annually in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
The workshop promotes discussion of the state-of-the-art on development, evaluation, and adoption of Free and Open Source Software. The goals of WSL are to bring together a diverse segment of the community, in terms of knowledge area, geography, and background; to identify ways in which FOSS research can interact with other research areas; and to discuss directions for future research.
# TOPICS OF INTEREST
We invite authors to submit original papers related -- but not limited -- to the following topics:
- social dynamics, management, development processes, and contributors’ motivations in FOSS communities;
- FOSS adoption in commercial and non-commercial contexts;
- automatic recommendation and quality assessment of FOSS;
- legal and economic aspects of FOSS;
- FOSS and education;
- development and evolution of FOSS projects;
- analysis of data produced by FOSS projects, such as source code, email, chat, and bug reports;
- tools to support software development focusing on FOSS developers’ needs;
- beyond software: free culture, open hardware, open design, open access, open source journalism.
# WORKSHOP FORMAT
This year, the workshop will consist of the following sessions:
- Technical sessions: authors of full papers will present their original research contributions in 20-40 minutes.
- Lightning sessions: authors of short papers will present their ongoing research in lightning talks (5-10 minutes).
- Poster sessions: authors of extended abstracts will present their undergraduate research through posters.
